For most of the bien pensant, revolutionary fervour is a vehicle for their social status ambitions. The real world outcome of the crackpot revolution's nominal goals is irrelevant. They're little more than sanctimonious window-dressing. The backstabbing and bootlicking struggle matters much more to the enthusiasts. A rare few will get steady paying gigs out of it. Short con grifters will cash in and run. The rest will be harvested for free labour and whatever meagre cash can be extracted. This is what happens when there's a huge surplus of wannabe elites, mostly mediocre, and negligible opportunity for them.
That's really the crux of the matter for me: the indifference to "real world outcomes". Of course, there never seems to be material consequences for this stratum, so perhaps that's not surprising.
